Roomba 770-What Exactly Can It Do?

Roomba 770The Roomba 770 is 3.6 inches high and weighs 8.4 pounds. Overall it’s grown a bit since it’s earliest days, but has also grown in performance and reliability. As with all Roomba vacuum’s this model removes dirt, dust and pet hair while you go about your daily life. The 770 throughly vacuum’s the entire floor, including those hard to reach spots under the bed and cabinet.

The device uses an optical and audio sensor to cleverly find dirt and dust on your floors, and will focus on the dirtiest areas to provide a clean all round finish, that any upright vacuum would be proud of (you of course don’t have to lug the Roomba around though)

The most obvious change in this newer model is the way it vacuum’s. After detecting a particularly grimy spot it begins an aggressive back and forth vacuuming motion, much like a human with an upright.  iRobot calls this “persistent path cleaning”

The roomba 770 works on carpets, hardwood, tile and linoleum. It uses iadapt responsive technology (whatever that means) to make your carpets and hard floors shine and glisten. The dual hepa air filters will stop fine dust from circulating in your home, leaving a fresher environment for the whole family. The Roomba will return back to it’s base to recharge after it’s finished it’s cleaning duties, which is standard across all models.

roomba 770The Roomba 770 seals away the gearbox and is far easier to clean than previous models. Squeegees, brushes and filters can be removed simply from the base, and with the cleaning tools provided, hair and other debris can be removed easily. Battery charging algorithm is also much improved, meaning the battery has a longer life and can clean for longer.

The model is shipped with a remote control, which can start the device cleaning or even guide it to dirty spots on your floors that you notice. Its bumper system (included) provides a cushion between the Roomba and your much loved furniture and freshly painted walls.

Roomba 770 Review

Roomba 770In this Roomba 770 review I think it is important to not only give you an insight into the capabilities of this new Roomba model, but to also compare it to older models. At first glance it was clear the 770 is the best looking model ever. It looks like it’s from the future and can be described as very cool looking. The contrast of gloss and matte surfaces make it look interesting and fitting in any modern, minimalistic household.

The controls on the device are almost the same as previous models, except for the lights on the top are now blue and appear to shine more often. After setting the new guy to work, I found that overall it does a good job. Hardwood floors make up a huge part of our household and the Roomba performed well providing a very clean finish. I found the 770′s all round cleaning coverage of my home, to be improved, although I have no scientific coverage results to back up my claim.

I found the internal design features to protect it from hair and dirt build up a lot better than on previous models. A great new feature is a dust bin fullness indicator, meaning you simply look at the top to see when you need to empty him. The new dust bin design has improved the way the debris and dirt falls into your trash upon emptying ie it falls out in one nice clump.

The front bumper has been improved, to take even more care of your furniture and walls, although one slight moan in this Roomba 770 review would be it still doesn’t protect enough. Various materials available from hardware shops can be added to overcome this problem however. I noticed that it moved quite a bit faster than earlier editions and saw fewer crop circles after cleaning.

I’m still astonished at how well all iRobot vacuums detect objects and stairs and act accordingly to prevent an early death. Unfortunately the 770 hasn’t been designed to clean stairs, although the technicians at iRobot are probably working on this as I write. Confining the Roomba to a certain space is again made easy with the inclusion of the virtual walls,  these prove a valuable inclusion with the device.

Depending on the height of your carpet, the Roomba may push the dock around when trying to return home for charging. I simply make sure the dock is against something that isn’t slick and this seems to solve this small problem.

To summarize the new Roomba 770 doesn’t clean as well as a regular vacuum, although it’s close and a lot closer than the 500 series for example. The 770 is the most powerful, reliable model yet and well worth the extra $. Roomba 770 review by Jake Stevens
